Vietnam - Nearly A Washout

We had heard numerous stories from many people we met along the way how Vietnam was. It definitely took us all by surprise just to what extent the Vietnamese operate. Like all Indo Asian people we have met or observed, they operate in a relaxed manner, going at their daily jobs at a general slow pace never breaking sweat. Once you place one behind a wheel or motorbike, they use it as a major release mechanism to exert any stress or tension. The taxi ride into Hanoi, the taxi driver was constantly on the horn and full lights to shift other vehicles out of the way. A weird and sometimes scary experience, especially when there's no seat belts.

We stayed briefly in Hanoi, which honestly wasn't up to much. Went to a museum and had a general walk around the main tourist area. Knowing our time in Vietnam was limited, we headed down to Danang on the over night train. The plan was to be in Hoi An and get suits made. The 14 hour train journey was stopped four hours outside Danang due to flooding. Ahead the track were flooded. The train wasn't moving for ad least a day. We decided to get off and catch a minibus down. After a good hour haggling with locals, we were moving.

We made it to Hoi An late that night. The previous night the town had been completely flooded. That area was experiencing the worst floods in 10 years. We checked into a local hotel for the night and planned to check out the situation the following day. More rain and we started to change the plans again. Na Trang had been on the cards, but was soon ditched as no buses or trains were going there or anywhere else for that matter. We grabbed a plane from Danang straight to HCMC, trying to salvage something from the washed out week in Vietnam.

HCMC was definitely the highlight of the Vietnam leg. We stayed in a recommended guest house in a perfect location in the main back packers haven. We were out every night enjoying the good nightlife. We visited the War museum and the Chu Ci Tunnels. Really enjoyed both of those experiences and definitely got a taste of how the VC overcame the Americans in such intuitive ways. Really jaw dropping what they had to put up with little or no firepower. We all fired AK 47's and M-16 Rifles. Man, their powerful. I have videos of all of us shooting. I know I've been promising some clips, but I'll have a chance this week to get the blog back on track.

Ko Tao now, we need a good drink free break. It's Scuba Diving time.

In work atm, going well. House is good, altho still no kitchen.

Goodluck uploading vids on Koh Tao! The internet there is proper crap. Enjoy the diving. Remember to keep breathing. Sounds stupid but you'll see

Hi Raymo,

Good to see you guys made it to Vietnam, sounds like the weather was a nightmare. Still it's a great place to see. By the way we had the same guy at the Cu Chi firing range, he was 13 when he fought in the war - he still looks about 13. Great pics fom Thailand looks like the full moon party rocked. Talk ta ya.
