New Years In Sydney

For New Years eve we didn't have a main plan of action. We headed up to Circular Quay in early afternoon to meet the lads who were just off work. Around the city that night there was many pre-ticket events which were on the whole too expensive. From $200 boat rides around the harbour to $150 for the night in the classy Ozzie bar called the Argyle around the "Rocks" area.

We heard that there was a great free view point of the Opera House and the Sydney Bridge from "The Domain" area, just east of the main bay. When we got there the queues were enormous. We left it way too late. We turned around and headed back to the Quays and picked up some goon and beer. Goon for all youz that don't know is really cheap wine in large 4-5 litres cartoons. Amazing stuff. At the moment in the house we have this 4.4L goon that cost only $7.50, which is €4.64. Ridiculous to be honest, but a common feature in the backpackers balanced diet, lol.

When we made it back to the Quays, the area was packed full of Irish, English, Scottish, Ozzie's and a multitude of Asian. The vibe was great down there with everyone enjoying the nice sunny day and the B.Y.O.B. (Bring Your Own Beer) policy. We found a spot close to the main area along the harbour and settled down for the afternoon, evening and night.

The city put on loads of entertainment for all the visitors around the area. Live music, flying displays and spectacular fireworks. Around 8 o'clock the first firework display took place for the families who wouldn't be out till late. Everyone enjoyed that small intro to the main firework display which would commence at 12.

The main count down was good craic with everyone gathered round in a big circle shouting, screaming and above all laughing aloud. The goon and beer had definitely kicked in at this stage. From what I remember the fireworks were unbelievable and a great sight to see coming high over the Opera House and Sydney Bridge. They lasted a good 10-15 minutes with everyone at the end exhausted. Shortly after the words "Goon me up" were heard and we got back to business.

I think I can safety say "definitely a better night than back home", sorry Dublin, lol.
