Before going to Adelaide it was a quick pit-stop for two days in Brisbane. It was good to catch up and see college buddy Del who has been working away for the past three months for a design based engineering company. This is something I hope to do next year all going well. The laptop and other bits and bobs were dropped off for convenience.
I wasn't sure what to expect from Adelaide. I met few people who had been to the South Australian state or even Adelaide city. There was little to see coming in on bus from the airport, no large skyscrapers, stadia or noticeable sites. It's a city which doesn't hold much notoriety like Sydney with the famous Opera House or in Melbourne with the MCG.
We stayed at the Cannon Backpackers in town, which was close to everything and reasonably priced with free breakfast included.
We had three days in Adelaide, which was adequate to get the main attractions in. We shopped on the main Rundell Mall street. Visited the Tandanya (National Aboriginal Cultural Institute). I was really impressed with the native Aboriginal Art. The use of simple shapes and vivid colour really personified the local Aboriginal themes like the "Seven Stars" or "Tandaya" (a Kaurna word for Red Kangaroo place). A stones throw from the CBD is the Botanic Gardens, which was well worth the visit. Blessed with a nice day there was plenty opportunities to take some great photo's.
The definite highlight of Adelaide was the Cleland Wildlife Park only twenty minutes from the city on bus. Just before arriving we stopped at Mount Lofty Summit, which gave great views of Adelaide and the surrounding areas. The park offered free range of it's grounds with a chance to feed the kangaroos, Wallabies and Emus. We got the chance to pet a Koala and hold a Green Olive Python, which was cool. They also put on a "Prey and Predators" show which gave a great insight into the animals living in SA.
Adelaide wasn't jaw dropping in any way but well worth the visit for the couple of days. For the girls it was something special as they'd never seen a Kangaroo or Koala in Australia. For me it was really another city to cross off the list. Adelaide done and dusted.
