A Poker Night For Keith Coneboy

This was a special night for everyone taking part. The event was a huge success with a great turn out. The poker night came about for one of my good friends I met in Bundaberg fruit picking, Keith Coneboy. Keith (25) was diagnosed with a life threatening form of leukemia just a few months ago and is currently going through extensive treatment back home in Liverpool. A number of friends from Bundaberg had been with Keith in Perth when he received the bad news. Everyone was truly shocked.

When I first arrived in Perth I met up with all the mates from fruit picking and came up with the idea of a Charity Fun Run for Keith. Keith had a fund raiser in Liverpool over the holidays which none of us could attend. The event would just be a small token to show we still have Keith in our thoughts. The run was aborted for a number of reasons, but mainly due to the majority being unfit and the likely hood of people not finishing and heatstroke. A few did buy runners and began training, but running 1-2km would definitely not be enough especially when the run was a hilly 7km from Wembley down to City Beach. Good try though lads, you know who you are.

A poker night seemed to be the answer using the lads house in Northbridge. Poker chips were bought and everyone made the effort to take part even if their poker skills weren't that up to scratch. 15 people played on two tables and the game lasted three hours. The winner was Phil, second was Mike "Bubble" and the organiser myself came third. It turned out to be a really good game with everyone enjoying the banter around the table. I have to say that I was clearly robbed by Phil who knocked me out on the river card. He wont be so lucky the next time!

A fund was collected from all the players that night to pay for a jersey I had bought for Keith. Keith being a major sports fan, it only seemed proper to buy him something sporty and Australian. I went for the West Coast Eagles home guernsey (as they call it in Oz) and everyone signed it who took part. I hope he likes it.
